Memorial Visit 2026 – Cat-feeder Dedication

By Anthony Hegarty · September 14, 2026

This year while at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University I had the pleasure of visiting the newly dedicated cat-feeding boxes at the ERAU campus. For those that don’t know, ERAU has a resident population of feral cats, numbering about 25-40 depending on the day and who you ask. Years ago, a decision was made not to try and eradicate the cats but rather strive to positively co-exist and support each other.

A rather startling result that maybe would be worth transplanting to today’s human to human behavior, nah it’ll never work there, right? But I digress…..

So back in 2021 when I was working with the good folks at ERAU Department of Philanthropy on G’s Scholarship, it was suggested to me that one of the causes our scholarship could support would be P.A.W.S or Protecting Animal Welfare Society. I found this to be a very good and appropriate idea as G was always an animal lover and particularly fond of cats. G had many cats growing up and continued that connection when we were married. Our first cat was called Slouchie Beamus and if you want to understand his name, you can find the explanation in Chapter 10 of her book.

Since the establishment of G’s scholarship fund, donations have helped to build several feral cat feeding stations, among other things, on the ERAU campus and the good folks at PAWS felt it would be a fitting tribute to name them after G. So now, when you visit the beautiful campus in Daytona Beach look for feeding stations, not to mention the cats.
