I bought the car primarily to be a car that my 1st wife, Sandy, would drive, or we would use to go on tours, vacations, etc. together. I was the beneficiary of a company car, and it made sense to keep that car, albeit nothing like a Porsche.

The 924t was metallic silver with black leather interior and was well optioned. The base model 924 in general was not so well received by Porsche purists as it was co-developed with Audi as an entry level Porsche. In later years it has become more accepted and sought after, particularly the turbocharged version, not to mention the 924 Carrera GT and GTS models, which were low production, elite models. Unlike those 2 models, the 924t did not have an intercooler for the turbo which compromised its performance somewhat. It was still a great car and quite a well-handling car with extra torque coming from the turbo and great balance due to the 50/50 weight split leveraging a transaxle mounted in the rear.

I really enjoyed the car and took it on numerous long journeys from my Atlanta home, including 6-hour, one-way trips to North Carolina. It was remarkably comfortable, even with stiff sports suspension and very tight bucket seats. It was also an excellent AutoX car, very nimble, quick in the lower ranges and the aforementioned, added torque.

I tried to keep the car in top condition, mechanically using only Porsche approved service shops, and cosmetically at “Tony’s Home Detail Shop!” The metallic silver paint and black trim would always show really well when taken car of with the use of high-quality products. At the time I was using primarily Griot’s products to wash and wax the car and “Black Again” for the trim. I was a wheels-off detailer back then. This would allow me to clean and polish both sides of the wheels as well as the brake calipers, the latter I would polish with special caliper polish to withstand the heat generated. It also allowed me to use Griot’s undercarriage spray to keep the plastic covers looking new. I would take a full Saturday or Sunday to do the entire car, and even had neighbors set up lawn chairs to watch, talk and pick up a pointer here and there, if not, just poke fun at the weird neighbor.

I kept the car for about 4 years after accumulating quite a few miles and replacing the turbocharger twice, my only sore spot with the car. In 1985 I traded it for a BMW 635 CSi which I will write about next.
