A life together, told in stories
Short Stories About a Tall Woman – Remembering Genevieve
The motivation for writing a book about my life with Genevieve, my wife of 18 years, came out of grief therapy as I was dealing with the immense loss of a truly beautiful, funny, caring, intelligent and kind woman.
Writing began as a way to express my feelings and, as I was adding more and more, it was suggested to me that writing and publishing a book would offer a unique way to “immortalize” our life together through the telling of stories.
The book is short by design and is intended to provide the reader with a few laughs and smiles while getting to know us both a little. It is not a book about grief.

Excerpt Chapter 3 – Moustaches & Condoms
“Once she unpacked her clothes she grabbed her suit-bag by the centre handle and pulled it off the bed. It was then that it happened! One of the pockets of the bag was inadvertently still open and out onto the bed fell about two dozen condom packets. We were both frozen as we looked at each other, she was speechless and looked a little mortified. All I could think to say in the moment was, ‘You do know we are only here till this Sunday, right?’ I mean talk about pressure!”
“We had a few moments to decompress and get ready for our evening out. We headed out to the cable car ride, which was on street level. It was a bit of a chilly evening, which was normal for San Francisco at that time of year. It was then that G dropped the proverbial hammer yet again. (You will notice this is a recurring theme and a delightful part of being with her.) As we approached the cable car, G pulled me aside and said, ‘There’s just one condition before we go.’ My first reaction is a flashback to our first date and that ‘one condition’ at Alto Palato. But knowing that luckily no food is served on the cable car, I felt comfortable in accepting the challenge. And then she tells me, ‘We have to both wear these all night.’ She reaches into her pocket and pulls out two totally fake, stick-on handlebar moustaches. My first reaction, being me, is to run. Was she kidding me? I don’t have the confidence to wear this in public. I probably wouldn’t even do this at home by myself. Then she smiled at me… and I am done! ‘How do I put this on?’ I ask.”
